
Three cities, three climates: caring for interiors in Bengaluru, Goa and Hyderabad
The same dining table needs different attention depending on where it stands. A practical guide to what moderate, coastal and dry climates each do to stone and timber.
A marble console in a Goa house, a walnut dining table in Hyderabad and a stone island in Bengaluru are not facing the same year. They are facing three different ones.
Most interior-care advice is written as though climate is a footnote. In practice it is one of the larger variables, and across the three cities we work in the differences are significant enough to change what you should actually do.
Why does climate matter more for timber than stone?
Because timber moves and stone largely does not.
Wood is hygroscopic. It takes moisture from the air when the air is damp and gives it back when the air is dry, and it changes dimension as it does so. A tabletop can be measurably wider in August than in February.
That movement is normal and is designed for. What causes damage is not humidity itself but change in humidity — particularly rapid change. Joints open, veneer lifts, panels cup, and finishes craze because the material beneath them moved and the finish did not.
Stone behaves quite differently. It does not swell and shrink in any meaningful way. What climate does to stone is mostly indirect: it affects the timber substructures, adhesives and fixings that stone sits on, and it affects how long a spill stays wet.
Goa: coastal humidity
Goa's problem is persistent moisture, and salt in the air alongside it.
What it does. Timber absorbs and swells. Drawers and doors that ran smoothly in April begin to bind. Joints tighten and then, when they dry, loosen. Mould appears in still air behind and beneath furniture. Metal fittings — hinges, runners, handles — corrode faster than people expect, and often before anyone notices the wood is struggling.
Stone is less affected directly, but spills stay wet for longer, which gives absorption more time to happen. A sealer earns its keep here.
What to do.
- Keep air moving. Still, humid air behind a cabinet is where mould starts. Pull large pieces a few inches off the wall.
- Use a dry microfibre cloth rather than a damp one. This is the single most common mistake in humid months.
- Silica gel inside enclosed cabinetry, replaced when it saturates.
- Check metal fittings periodically, not just timber surfaces.
- Where there is air conditioning, using it is dehumidification as much as cooling.
Hyderabad: dry heat
Hyderabad presents the opposite problem for much of the year.
What it does. Timber releases moisture and shrinks. Gaps appear at joints. Solid panels can split along the grain if the drying is fast. Finishes that were applied in damper conditions can craze as the wood contracts beneath them. Veneer and laminate edges lift.
Direct sun is the compounding factor. A tabletop in a south-facing window is not only drier than the rest of the room, it is drier on one side than the other, which is exactly the condition that causes cupping.
What to do.
- Manage sunlight. Sheer curtains during the harshest hours do more for a timber table than any polish.
- Avoid placing solid timber directly against an exterior wall that heats through the afternoon.
- Where the air is very dry for long stretches, a humidifier in the room stabilises things more effectively than treating the furniture.
- Watch joints rather than surfaces. Shrinkage announces itself at the joints first.
Bengaluru: moderate, with a monsoon
Bengaluru is genuinely the easier of the three. Temperature and humidity stay within a comparatively narrow band for much of the year, and that stability is exactly what timber wants.
The qualification is the monsoon. For a few months the city behaves more like a humid coastal climate, and then returns. It is the transition that matters — timber handles steady conditions well and dislikes being moved between them quickly.
What to do.
- Treat the monsoon as a distinct season with its own routine, then return to normal.
- Do any polishing or oiling before the rains, not during them. Sealing a surface that has already absorbed moisture traps that moisture underneath.
- Keep the dry-cloth discipline through the wet months.
The rule that applies everywhere
Whatever the city: treat surfaces before the season turns, not in the middle of it.
Applying a finish, an oil or a sealer to a surface that is currently holding moisture locks the moisture in. The result is often clouding, and occasionally something worse underneath. The window you want is the stable stretch before conditions change — which in practical terms means late in the dry season rather than at the first rain.
Where this stops being general advice
Everything above describes tendencies. It does not describe your specific piece.
A solid teak table and a veneered one respond differently to the same room. A stone top on a timber base has two materials moving at different rates. A ground-floor room in an older Goa house and a sixth-floor apartment in the same city are not the same environment. And a piece that has been in the house for fifteen years has already found an equilibrium a new arrival has not.
When we assess a surface, where it lives is part of it — the room, the orientation, the ventilation, the season it arrived in. It changes what is worth recommending, and occasionally it changes the recommendation to "leave this alone and manage the room instead".

Common questions
What indoor humidity should I aim for?
Somewhere in the region of 45 to 55 percent relative humidity is a widely used target for solid timber furniture. More important than the exact figure is stability — timber tolerates a steady level far better than it tolerates swings.
Is teak genuinely better in coastal climates?
Teak has a high natural oil content that makes it more moisture-resistant than most timbers, which is why it has long been used in coastal and marine settings. It is not immune, and teak in a humid coastal home still needs maintenance — just less frequently than more absorbent species.
Should I wipe wooden furniture with a damp cloth in the monsoon?
Use a dry microfibre cloth during humid months. A damp cloth adds moisture to a surface already dealing with more than it wants, and repeated damp wiping is a common cause of clouded finishes and swollen edges.
Does dry weather affect marble the way it affects wood?
Far less. Stone does not move with humidity the way timber does. What dry heat affects is the surrounding structure — timber substructures, adhesives and joints — and that movement can stress a stone top mounted on it.
